Get ready! Greg is about to turn nasty--again! While he's slowly turning the thumbscrews on Mike over his fling with Julia, poor Sally has also had warning of his fury with a menacing postcard and the torching of her van.
But that's not the end of it. On Friday, dramatic developments signal his obsession with getting revenge on Sally and Mike (at side with Julia)--and boy, is it going to be ugly. Stephen Billington, who plays the sinister smoothie (above), is relishing the plot which he says will "keep the nation gripped."
"Greg is lashing out, " says Stephen. "He feels that between them, Sally and Mike have ruined his life. He wants the money from Mike to get his business going again, and he's also getting pleasure from making him sweat, but he doesn't really intend to harm Sally and the kids any more. However, what happens on Friday is more a case of him being in a stable state of mind. He ends up finding himself completely out of his depth."
Stephen's not revealing how events progress after Friday, but he believes viewers will feel a "certain amount of sympathy" for Greg. "People will see that Greg isn't intentionally malicious. He's not had a huge amount of love in his life and wants to prove himself. Unfortunately, the failure of his business means that he's having to face that he himself is a failure, like he's been told all his life."
Revealing the complexities of Greg's character has fascinated Stephen. "He's a human being, and we only reveal our dark side once we get to know each other," he says.
But he admits he's been shocked by viewers' reaction to Greg. "People seem to be far more angry about Sally's behaviour. This says a lot about the sexism that still exists."
Stephen is delighted to be back with Coronation Street again, but he's also considering various projects outside Weatherfield. "I don't know how the storyline pans out for Greg, although I would imagine he might be laid to rest after this," he says.
