GOLD DIGGER!

Golden boy Greg Kelly is beginning to reveal his true colours these days--but that doesn't mean that everyone can see them, least of all his on/off romance Maxine. At the moment the dizzy blonde imagines that she's met her ideal man but, as anyone can see, there's heartbreak ahead for the smitten hairdresser. So far she has been stood up, ignored and deserted mid-date by her idol. And now, to add insult to injury, he's even started eyeing another woman--Sally Webster....

MAXINE'S MAN?

"I feel really sorry for Maxine," sighs actress Tracy Shaw. "She really likes Greg and she's offering him everything. She really thinks that this is it, true love, and as far as she's concerned everything is going swimmingly."

Of course, Maxine isn't always the most perceptive person on the block, especially where men are concerned. "Audrey is becoming quite motherly towards Maxine, and she doesn't trust Greg at all," Tracy reveals. "She has told Max to play it cool and take things slowly, but Maxine is incapable of doing that because she is scared of losing him."

"Greg is her fantasy man--he's older than she is, he has money and she wants to be wined and dined and whisked off her feet. In Maxine's eyes there is nothing wrong with Greg, and she won't take anybody else's advice because once she is in love, that's it. She totally believes him."

GROWING IN CONFIDENCE

Of course, we know her trust is misplaced. Recently Greg seems to be setting his sights on Sally--especially since he heard about her inheritance from her mother. And, despite being back together with Kevin, Sally is slowly reciprocating his interest. "Since Sally went out with Chris, she's thinking along totally different lines," says Sally Whittaker. "He gave her a confidence which she didn't have before, and made her feel like a person in her own right and not just a married woman with kids."

"Her relationship with Kevin will never be the same again, and so she's now prone to looking at attractive men, which she wasn't in the days before Natalie when her marriage was still solid. Sally knows that Greg is a bit of a rogue, but she does fancy him."

But Sally is blissfully unaware of any ulterior motive. "I'm sure she doesn't suspect for one minute that Greg is interested in her money. She'd be heartbroken if she thought that was the case," Sally reflects.

TAKING ADAVANTAGE

Broken hearts, however--either Sally's or Maxine's--are the least of Greg Kelly's concerns. "Greg can be a bit of a swine," admits Stephen Billington. "He's quite spoilt and used to getting what he wants and he is willing to trample people underfoot to do that. He likes Maxine because she is pretty and available and she's someone who looks good on his arm. But he isn't deeply involved with her.

"From Greg's point of view, Maxine is very malleable," he continues. "She's the kind of girl that you can easily use and discard. I suppose if the right woman came along and he fell head over heels in love then Greg may settle down, but at the moment he's seeing opportunities in women rather than relationships. He just takes advantage of people."

Which brings us to his new-found interest in Mrs Webster. "Greg isn't as rich as he makes out at all," Stephen explains. "I assume his stepfather left his business to his own sons and that Greg has been pushed out. His mother supported him for a while but she refuses to do that anymore, which is why he's now working for Mike Baldwin. When he hears about Sally's inheritance he goes about her. I don't think he necessarily sees it as being swinish. As far as Gregg is concerned he is doing what is necessary. He's an opportunist and he goes for it without really thinking about others' feelings."

How far will Greg be able to go before his real intentions are rumbled?
