Amazon.co.uk explained the Regions this way:
'Currently, there are 6 global regions that identify where specific DVDs are compatible with the players typically sold in that region.Additionally, if you look in your DVD manual, it will tell you exactly where to find your number. The number is usually found on the back, in the Serial Number box, usually in the right hand corner.The majority of all current titles play only in *one* specific region unless otherwise noted. All of the DVDs sold by Amazon.co.uk are encoded for Region 2 only and may not work on DVD players in other countries.
The following are the six regions and their corresponding numerical equivalent:
1 - US, US Territories, and Canada.
2 - Japan, Europe, South Africa, and the Middle East, including Egypt
3 - Southeast Asia, East Asia, including Hong Kong.
4 - Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Central America, South America and the Caribbean.
5 - Former Soviet Union, Indian sub-continent, Africa, North Korea and Mongolia.
6 - China.'
