Ian was Artistic Director of the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh for eight years, where his productions included Reader by Ariel Dorfman, Unidentified Human Remains... and Poor Super Man by Brad Fraser (Evening Standard Award), Ines de Castro by John Clifford, Moscow Stations with Tom Courtney (Evening Standard Award Best Actor), Hanging the President by Michele Celeste (Scotsman Fringe First), Bondagers by Sue Glover (Scotland on Sunday Award). Other productions include the original production of Trainspotting at the Citizen's Theatre and Bush Theatre, The Caretaker for Birmingham Rep, Charley's Aunt and Private Lives at the Royal Lyceum, Edinburgh. As Artistic Director of TAG Theatre Company, his productions included Othello, As You Like It, Romeo and Juliet, Hard Times, Can't Pay? Won't Pay!, and Great Expectations. Ian's recent productions include Killing Rasputin at the Bridewell, Proposals by Neil Simon and Of Mice and Men for the West Yorkshire Playhouse, Fool for Love for the Donmar Warehouse, Nabokov's Gloves by Peter Moffat for Hampstead Theatre, Goodnight Children Everywhere by Richard Nelson (Olivier Award Best New Play) and Victoria by David Greig for the RSC and Five Kinds of Silence by Shelagh Stephenson. Ian has directed EastEnders for the BBC.
