MR NICE GUY?
As Sally tries to rebuild her life this month, her ex-lover turned enemy is living across the street- a constant reminder of the mistakes she made. But Greg Kelly feels no guilt over the way he's treated the young mum-- and instead seems bent on revenge as his business venture lies in ruins.
"He turns into a madman," admits Stephen Billington, who brings the bad guy to our screens. "His plan hasn't worked, and like a lot of people in that situation he blames everyone but himself. Deep down he knows that he's as much to blame as anyone for what has happened but Sally is the closest person to him and it is in his nature to blame her. He's a very selfish man."
And things go from bad to worse in the coming weeks as Greg runs into debt and loses his flat. He sinks deeper into drink and plans to make Sally pay for what he sees her betrayal. It's a gripping storyline, but nice guy Stephen isn't looking forward to the public's reaction. "I'm a bit worried, more so than If I was just playing a nasty character in a one off drama," he confesses.
"Coronation Street is so real for so many people and I can totally understand why the characters become a part of peoples lives. They take it very seriously and that's the disturbing aspect of playing Greg in the Street."
But he's adamant that he's a decent bloke really. "Of course every character you play has some of yourself in it, and you can't avoid that, so I must have some kind of propensity to be nasty," he admits. "But I could never behave like Greg does--I have far too much of a conscience."
