Out of the Blue is rather like "NYPD Blue", only better. It is a police drama and mostly we follow the Detectives around. Also there is a lot of that hand-held camera feel to the shots, with quite a bit of rapid panning. And some of the story lines are ongoing from episode to episode. In it, Stephen plays Alex Holder, a constable, that is involved with Rebecca (Becky) Bennett, one of the Detectives. She has a problem with their differences in status, and hides the relationship at the station. When he confronts her about it, she does go public on it, but dumps him shortly after. Stephen's Alex is very open and vulnerable, and it is painful to watch her treatment of him, but it is a really nice piece of work on his part.

What The Globe and Mail (John Doyle) had to say about Out of the Blue:
This is one of the two new drama series starting on Showcase this week (30 August 1997) and it's brilliant. OUT OF THE BLUE is much better than expected--a grim (and often grimly humourous) Brit cop series, very much a police procedural in the style of Homicide. Tautly written, with the sort of crisp, colloquial dialogue you expect from the Brits, it's clammy, a kitchen-sink sort of drama.
Tape Sources: Unfortunately no outlet source known of. "Showcase" (in Canada) showed this series in 1998. They said maybe they would show it again. So, if you're in Canada (or have friends in Canada), maybe drop them an email. Also, couldn't hurt to drop A & E an email; if they get enough mail, they might show it. [Got mine from a friend in Australia.] Other thing is, BBC made it, email them and let them know you want it on video. Can't hurt.
