To coincide with the Centenary of Salvador Dali

Gergeous Productions is proud to present

THE SECRET DEATH OF SALVADOR DALI

by Stephen Sewell

Dali is the perfect contradictory character to represent our modern world. A maverick, a disputed genius, a monster, a creative revolutionary, and unrefined egomaniac. Not just a visual artist, he was a performance artist, his life and art inextricable. That is what makes him the perfect subject for a highly theatrical and extraordinary evening of theatre.

‘The Secret Death of Salvador Dali’ starts out as a grotesque Freudian Carnival and ends up as a parable of the failure of twentieth century art to respond to the real world. Dali lies in bed dying as his life is acted out in a surreally comic nightmare.

Well-known for his film and theatre work, including his AFI Award winning

script of "The Boys" as well as plays such as "The Blind Giant is Dancing", "The

Secret Death of Salvador Dali" (Best Show of the Adelaide Fringe, 2001) and "Myth Propaganda and Disaster in Nazi Germany and Contemporary America – A Drama in 30 Scenes", Sewell is one of the most celebrated and experienced writers in Australia.

Two actors – Stephen Billington and Jessica Gerger – create an astonishing array of characters, continually swapped between them and played on multiple levels, with the added interest of cross gender roles. Key figures include his sister Anna Maria, Federico Garcia Lorca, the fellow surrealists Bunuel and Breton, and of course Gala.

Direction by James Kemp with set and costumes by Rebecca Elfverson, whose fantastic designs for The Feigned Courtesans (Old Red Lion Theatre 2002), received rave reviews.

The production is being put on to coincide with the Centenary of Dali, which is being celebrated with exhibitions and events around the world.
