Braveheart is basicially a love story. It has several. One of in which, Stephen plays Phillip, Edward II's boyfriend. Edward II thinks Phillip is brilliant and makes him his military advisor. Unfortunately, Phillip is not as good at military strategem as Edward thinks he is. And when they are left in charge of the kingdom, a lot of people get killed. King Edward I, is a cruel and brutal man. When he sees Phillip's influence on his son, Edward II, he demonstrates his cruelty by abruptly and unceremoniously tossing Phillip out of the window to his death.

Stephen's Phillip is gentle and smiley and very focused on Edward II. At no time is mean or spiteful to anyone, not even the Princess, who he had reason to resent. Can't have everything, but I wish he had had more air time! And apparently, Stephen had fight scenes that were cut from the movie. Mel Gibson has a Director's cut version, unfortunately the fight scenes are not restored. But if swordfighting is your cup of tea, there is some outstanding swordfighting by Stephen in 'Highlander: The Raven!'  So check that out!

*Ah. Of Course.*
Carry on.
*It's not your fault.*
*Stand up to him.*
Waiting for Longshanks.
We have sent riders to speed any word.
And you have done nothing.
I have ordered conscriptions. They are assembled and ready to depart.
There is a very urgent message from York.
Wallace has sacked York.
Longshanks reading the message.
Checking the contents of the box.
*Our nephew. What beast could do such a thing?*
If he can sack York, he can invade lower England.
*We would stop him.*
*I am skilled... *
*...in the arts of war...*
*...and military tactics, sire.*
Then tell me, what advice..
...would you offer..
..on the present situation?

What Stephen had to say about 'Mel Gibson':

'He's a really sweet guy. He's very quietly spoken, genuine person. Really easy to get on with.' (This is Worcestershire, 22 September 2002)

Just about anywhere!  Critics Choice is very reasonable.

You might also want to note that there is also a Braveheart DVD by Paramount that retails at approximately $29.99 and includes anamorphic widescreen, Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, a newly-recorded Mel Gibson commentary track, theatrical trailers and a half-hour behind-the-scenes documentary on the making of the film.
