Set in the 1870's, Stephen plays Lieutenant James, a young cavalry officer and casual acquaintance of the four American girls in this BBC production of Edith Wharton's final unfinished novel (1938). Stephen's character is genuine and sympathetic and the writers should have given him more lines and air time. [Notable and fun: Moustache!]

Nothing against the other actors, but if you are interested only in Stephen's parts and your VCR has a linear counter, you can fast forward to these scenes and times:

At the party 1:21:22--45 [Listen for: "Ah, that's a shame." ]

At the card game 1:33:51--1:40:35  [Listen for: "Good Lord that's it! A Straight flush!"]

What The Globe and Mail (John Haslett Cuff) had to say about The Buccaneers:

"It is worth watching for the art direction alone, inspired especially by the work of James Tissot, and even Goya. But the series' primary delight lies in the broad range of characterizations and the timeless universality of the struggle for love and social acceptance. The series was directed by Philip Saville and has an amazing cast, including Rosemary Leach, Elizabeth Ashley, Michael Kitchen, Jenny Agutter and a host of lesser-known but equally talented performers."
